REI092: FROM POVERTY TO PROSPERITY

W/ KAYR

18 October 2021

Robert Leonard talks with KAYR about how education has played a role in his real estate investing career, what the pros and cons are of having a real estate license, what limiting beliefs he had about becoming a real estate investor and how he overcame them, and much, much more!

KAYR is the co-founder of KAYJAY Consulting and a stellar example of a young professional who has benefited from working on Wall Street and building a multi-million dollar real estate investment company with currently over 100 rental units from scratch. He was the first in his family and circle of friends to go to college, which meant he had many obstacles to overcome. He held positions at Goldman Sachs, Sirios Capital Management, Raptor Capital Management, and Truist Securities before going full-time into real estate. He is now a bonafide real estate investor who has assembled a team of professionals to assist across the initial identification, acquisition, and ongoing management of target properties. In addition, he is a licensed real estate salesperson, a transformational speaker, life coach, and business consultant, who was nominated for the 40 under 40 Leadership Awards Program in Philadelphia.

KAYR (00:02):
So actually, I got my real estate license because I was always one of those people that think like a football owner of a team where I’m thinking about, number one, what is the vision for the franchise? Number two, how can I hire the best coach to be the GM and pick the players and do the day-to-day? And number three, how can I step back and watch it from afar?

Robert Leonard (00:27):
On today’s show, I talk with KAYR about how education has played a role in his real estate investing career, what the pros and cons are of having a real estate license, what limiting beliefs he had about becoming a real estate investor, how he overcame those limiting beliefs and a bunch more.

KAYR (02:31):
So I grew up in Philadelphia with my six siblings in a single-parent household. We grew up on welfare. For the people that don’t know what that is, it’s the EBT cards. And we were so poor that we lived on both sides of the same block, on the even side and the uneven side. And I remember vividly when I was really, really young, at one point, we were … our house had burned down and an elementary teacher had come by and bought some fried chicken. She had my favorite, which was the original, but she messed up and she had mashed potatoes and she had mac and cheese, like, “You’re killing me. Where’s my coleslaw?”
